Islamabad:
Interior Minister Sheikh Rashid Ahmed announced on Tuesday that Prime Minister Imran Khan would launch e-passport service on Wednesday.

The new biometric passport will use an electronic chip, the federal minister said on his Twitter handle, adding that 29 new state-of-the-art security features have been added to the e-passport.

He added that this would be the biggest upgrade of Pakistani travel documents since 2004.The Minister said that e-passport holders will be able to avail e-gate facility at all airports across the world.

He further said that initially e-passport facility would be available for diplomatic and government officials.

An e-passport is a highly secure travel document that contains biometric information about an embedded microchip holder.

With the launch of the service, the country will become one of the few countries to have an electronic passport system, which will increase security and facilitate international travel.

The Government of Pakistan on March 30 launched the country's electronic passport to facilitate easy and safe international travel for Pakistani citizens in Pakistan and abroad.

On the occasion of issuance of e-passport, Home Minister Sheikh Rashid Ahmed also said that now 191 countries are eligible to apply for Pakistani visa.

The e-passport contains an electronic chip on one of the passport pages, which will be used to store biometric information about the holder.

The chip contains data that will verify the identity of the passport holder and will include the passport holder's biometrics, personal data found on the passport's data page, a unique identification number and digital signature. Newly launched e-passports in Pakistan comply with UN ICAO standards.

E-passports are already in use in more than 150 countries around the world. Many countries have turned to e-passports in view of the growing need for effective and better border security. Pakistan also issues online visas to citizens of 191 countries.

Pakistan an e-passport application process


The application process for Pakistan e-passport will be similar to obtaining a traditional passport. Initially, e-passport facility will be available only to Pakistani diplomatic and government officials.

Applicants will receive an e-passport upon completion of the process. Until then, only traditional passports will be issued. The documents required for e-passport will be similar to machine readable passport (MRP).

The validity of Pakistani passport is currently 5 and 10 years.

The extension fee will be the same as before.
